Renowned descendants include Dame Whina Cooper, who led a land march in 1975. Their central organisation is Te Rūnanga ā-Iwi o Ngāpuhi. They are often presumed to be a subtribe of Ngapuhi, but in fact their first ancestor. Using muskets gained through trade with Europeans, Ngāpuhi defeated several tribes in the ‘musket wars’ of the 1820s. Eventually the name of Ngāpuhi was given to all tribes in the Hokianga and Bay of Islands. Some descendants moved eastward, taking over other groups. Through his marriages, Rāhiri forged links with many tribes. Where the current system generates competition between Hapu, the process and structures proposed here aim to create and facilitate co-operation. The points where it landed marked the boundary between their two regions – Hokianga and Taumārere.Īll tribes north of Auckland are descendants of Kairewa and his wife Waimirirangi, ‘the queen of the northern tide’. 1.4.1 Hapu are the building blocks of an Iwi and the driver’s of economic, social and cultural development.

The text below is an extract from the original paper considered by the NZHPT Board at the time of the reassessment of the registration. The tribe's founding ancestor, Rāhiri, was descended from Kupe, Nukutawhiti and Puhi. Pouerua was reassessed by the Maori Heritage Council on 2 June 1994 under the transitional provisions of the Historic Places Act 1993 (HPA 1993), and re-entered onto the Register as a Category I historic place. After he returned to Hawaiki, two captains, Nukutawhiti and Ruanui, set off again to establish settlements in New Zealand. The Board members are Sir Brian Roche (Establishment Chair), Deputy Chair Ripeka Evans (Ngpuhi, Ngti Porou, Te Aupuri, Ngti Kahu), Lindsay Faithfull (Ngpuhi), Sarah Petersen, and Geoff Taylor. Their territory stretches from the Hokianga Harbour to the Bay of Islands, and to Whangārei in the south.Īrriving in the Matawhaorua canoe, the navigator Kupe named the Hokianga Harbour. Ngāpuhi is the largest tribe in New Zealand.
